Giving Back: Heifer International

This Christmas season, its really important for us to remember that its not all about scoring the best deal on the latest crap for your loved ones. The most important thing is remember those that are otherwise forgotten. A tradition in my home has always been going through that "cow catalog" for Heifer International and picking out a cool and useful thing to give to someone in need. I always loved giving chickens and goats, my brother gave bibles and other things missionaries needed. This is their mission statement right from their website:

Heifer envisions…
A world of communities living together in peace and equitably sharing the resources of a healthy planet.
Heifer’s mission is… To work with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth.
Heifer's strategy is… To “Pass on the Gift.” As people share their animals’ offspring with others – along with their knowledge, resources, and skills – an expanding network of hope, dignity, and self-reliance is created that reaches around the globe.
Heifer’s History This simple idea of giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief caught on and has continued for over 65 years. Today, millions of families in 128 countries have been given the gifts of self-reliance and hope.

How cool, right? So pass on that mega trip to Walmart and head over to Heifer International. Give what you can and let your kids pick out something to send as well. You might not think they will care, but I will tell you this. I cant remember most of the stuff I got when I was 9 for Christmas. But I do remember being excited about the chickens for a family far away.

Merry Christmas!
